The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a new directive that trims the 2026 presidential election campaign period to just 100 days. This move has sparked debate among political observers, as it significantly limits the time available for candidates to reach all corners of the country.

Eng. Simon Byabakama, the EC Chairperson, made the announcement, urging all presidential aspirants to plan their campaigns within this strict timeframe. With Uganda’s 146 districts, candidates now face a daunting task of covering more than one district per day.

The reduced campaign window is expected to heavily impact opposition figures like Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. As the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Bobi Wine had planned an extensive grassroots campaign, especially in central Uganda where he enjoys strong support.

Political analysts argue that the short campaign period may favor the incumbent, President Yoweri Museveni, who has already been touring the country under government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).

Museveni has focused much of his recent activity in the Buganda region — a known NUP stronghold — distributing financial support under the PDM initiative. This effort is seen as a strategy to win over voters and weaken opposition influence.

Critics have raised concerns that the EC's decision could hinder democratic fairness and voter engagement.

Meanwhile, opposition parties are strategizing to adapt to the shorter campaign trail.

The 2026 presidential race is shaping up to be one of the most intense in Uganda’s political history
