General David Sejusa, also known by his earlier surname Tinyefuza, once held some of the highest positions within Uganda’s military and political corridors.

A founding member of the National Resistance Army (NRA), he rose to become a member of the High Command, army commander, and Presidential Adviser on Peace and Security. He also served in intelligence coordination until his resignation in December 1996–early 1997, prompting a constitutional court case over whether his resignation was legally recognized .

Sejusa’s resignation was followed by legal wrangling. He formally resigned on 3 December 1996 but was told his resignation was “null and void” and had to go through formal channels—leading him to petition Uganda’s Constitutional Court.

The court ultimately ruled in his favor, affirming the validity of his resignation . Thereafter, Sejusa retreated from public military life and gradually faded into political exile.

By August 2022, after decades in public service and a rift with President Museveni, Sejusa was formally retired from the UPDF, along with more than 30 other high-ranking generals, marking his full exit from military and political power structures in Uganda .

Since then, Sejusa has remained off the radar. He is believed to be based in the United Kingdom, where he established the Freedom and Unity Front in exile, criticizing President Museveni’s administration from abroad .

Beyond rare media statements from exile and occasional mentions in political commentary, Sejusa has kept a deliberately low profile.

Today in July 2025 General David Sejusa remains a figure of historical significance whose public life ended following his resignation and the legal affirmation of that act
