Opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye’s bail fate hangs in the balance as his wife, Winnie Byanyima, joined supporters in court on Wednesday awaiting a judge’s ruling on the matter.

Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, took to social media to share her thoughts from the courtroom as she waited for the decision on her husband’s release.

She expressed hope that justice would be served and that she would be able to leave court with Besigye.

“In court, waiting to hear the judge rule on Kizza Besigye bail application hoping for justice and to drive home with my spouse,” she posted.

Her remarks also reflected on the courtroom traditions in Uganda’s judicial system.

Byanyima questioned why judges still wore wigs and why lawyers appeared in long black gowns, wondering if such practices made justice appear mysterious to the public.

Besigye, a former presidential candidate and one of President Yoweri Museveni’s most prominent critics, has been facing multiple legal battles over the years.

His latest arrest and detention have drawn widespread attention from opposition supporters and human rights advocates, who have called for his immediate release.

The ruling on his bail application will determine whether he can temporarily regain his freedom as he continues to contest the charges against him.

Supporters, political allies, and family members are anxiously awaiting the court’s decision, which could have significant implications for the ongoing political tensions in the country
