Uganda’s coffee industry is on a record-breaking trajectory, with exports reaching 8.4 million 60-kilogram bags, valued at UGX 8.2 trillion (US$ 2.4 billion) over the 12 months from November 2024 to October 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has reported.

This represents a 46.96% increase in quantity and a 77.33% rise in value compared to the previous year.

October 2025 Performance

In October alone, Uganda exported 685,720 bags worth UGX 642.7 billion (US$ 185.56 million). Of this, 597,925 bags were Robusta and 87,795 bags Arabica. The average export price was US$ 4.51 per kilogram, slightly higher than September 2025 but lower than the same month last year.

Coffee Types and Prices

Robusta accounted for 87% of total exports, with the highest prices fetched by Washed Robusta at US$ 4.88/kg.

Arabica exports surged, with Bugisu C/PB selling at US$ 8.33/kg, and Arabica volume increasing by 117% year-on-year.

Export Destinations

Europe continues to dominate Uganda’s coffee market, taking 63% of exports. Italy led with 26.22%, followed by Germany (10.67%) and Algeria (7.49%). African countries imported 16% of Uganda’s coffee.

Leading Exporters

Ugacof (U) Ltd topped the market with a 12.44% share, followed by Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd (8.99%) and Touton Uganda Ltd (6.86%). The top 10 exporters accounted for 64% of total exports, reflecting increasing competition among coffee companies.

Production and Development Initiatives

The export surge is attributed to improved production in central and eastern Uganda and better global prices amid supply concerns in Central America, Brazil, and Vietnam. In October, 5,736 farmers received specialised training on soil fertility, pest control, and post-harvest handling. Additionally, 10,215 old coffee trees were rehabilitated, and farmers were supplied with 17,880 bags of fertiliser to boost productivity.

Outlook

Uganda’s coffee exports are projected to reach 550,000 60-kilogram bags in November 2025, with the main harvest season underway in Central and Eastern regions. MAAIF continues to implement strategic interventions to enhance coffee quality, production, and market access, ensuring Uganda remains competitive in the global coffee market
