The Cranes finished last in Group C behind Nigeria, Tunisia and East African rivals Tanzania to exit the competition early.

Coached by former Harambee Stars boss Paul Put, Uganda began their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Tunisia before drawing against Tanzania 1-1 in their second game.

The game could have gone differently had CHAN 2024 star Allan Okello buried a stoppage-time penalty. Their last game ended in a 3-1 defeat to Nigeria on Tuesday evening in Fez.

The AFCON 2023 runners-up drew first blood seven minutes before the break through Paul Onuachu. Put withdrew goalkeeper Denis Onyango for Salim Magoola at the start of the second half, but Magoola was sent off shortly after handling the ball outside his area.

Nigeria capitalised on their numerical advantage as Raphael Onyedika scored a brace before Rogers Mato completed a wonderful team move for Uganda's consolation.

How much will Uganda get despite getting eliminated?

The early elimination would sting, given that the Cranes would have fancied their chances to qualify as one of the best losers.

For their efforts, they are set to be sent off with a reward package from the lofty prize money set aside by CAF.

The eliminated teams at the group stage, like Uganda, will each walk away with $500,000 (around KSh 64.5 million).

How Tanzania qualified for AFCON Round of 16

Meanwhile, Tanzania sneaked through to the Round of 16 for the first time in their history as one of the best losers.

The Taifa Stars did so despite failing to win any of the three group stage games. They were beaten by Nigeria in the opening game before holding Uganda to a 1-1 draw. Their last game ended in another one-all draw against Tunisia.

They will now face the host Morocco on Sunday in Rabat for a chance to play in the quarter-final.
