Don’t Quote Us Wrong! EC Defends Its Position on Voting and Going Home

The Electoral Commission (EC) has come out to clarify its position on the guidance given to voters about casting their ballots and leaving polling stations. Speaking during a media briefing, EC Chairperson Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon said the Commission has been widely misunderstood and misquoted on the matter. He stressed that the EC has never instructed voters to abandon their civic duty, but rather encouraged orderly conduct to protect peace and the integrity of the electoral process.

Justice Byabakama explained that voting is a personal civic responsibility that should be carried out peacefully and without interference. Once a voter has cast their ballot, they are encouraged to leave the polling station area to avoid congestion, confusion, or unnecessary tension. He noted that polling stations are not places for debate, confrontation, or prolonged gatherings, and that crowding can disrupt the smooth conduct of voting.

The EC Chairperson further clarified that results declaration remains a transparent and well-regulated process handled by trained election officials in the presence of agents and observers. He dismissed claims suggesting that voters are being pushed away to hide election results, calling such claims misleading and dangerous. According to the Commission, all legally accredited agents and observers are allowed to monitor the process as provided by law.

As the country moves closer to polling day, the Electoral Commission has urged the public and political actors to avoid spreading misinformation. Justice Byabakama appealed to the media and opinion leaders to report accurately and responsibly, warning that false narratives can create unnecessary fear and tension. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to free, fair, and transparent elections, urging all Ugandans to participate peacefully and trust the established electoral procedures.
