Police Investigate Two Devastating Arson Attacks in Wakiso and Mukono
Police are currently investigating two separate cases of arson that took place in Wakiso and Mukono districts during the early hours of 1st January 2026. Both incidents have left residents in shock and fear as they deal with the aftermath of property loss and potential threats from individuals known to them.
The first incident occurred in Wakiso District under KMP North at Kireka–Bira village, Nakabugo Parish. The complainant, Natukunda Mercy, reported that she and her husband had left their home the night before to attend overnight prayers on 31st December 2025. It was around 4:00 am on New Year’s Day when neighbors noticed that their house was engulfed in flames. Though the fire was put out, it had already caused significant damage. Several household items, including mattresses, clothes, and suitcases, were completely burnt.
A neighbor reported seeing a woman leaving the scene shortly after the fire started. This woman, who is believed to be someone familiar to the complainant, is now a key suspect in the investigation. The police responded swiftly to the scene, documenting the damage and collecting statements from witnesses. They have arrested a suspect who is currently assisting with the investigation. While the exact motive remains unclear, police are continuing their inquiries to determine the cause and find those responsible for this alarming attack.
In a second, separate incident under KMP East in Mukono District, another case of arson was reported at Kitega village. The complainant, Namutebi Ritah, had been away from her home for several weeks. When she returned on 1st January, she briefly stepped out to celebrate the New Year. Upon her return, she was devastated to find that her house had been completely destroyed by fire, with all her belongings reduced to ashes.
Namutebi further revealed that she had been receiving threats from a man she knew, and there had been ongoing domestic disputes between them. The police suspect that the fire could be linked to these disagreements. They immediately visited the scene, documented the damage, and recorded statements from the complainant and witnesses. Investigators also recovered evidence to aid in the case. As of now, efforts are underway to trace and interview the suspect, who remains at large.
In both cases, police are treating the incidents as arson and are actively working to uncover the truth behind these destructive acts. The investigation continues, and authorities have promised to provide updates as more information comes to light. Both communities in Wakiso and Mukono are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help the police in their efforts to prevent further crimes of this nature.
