Shock in Rwampara as Woman Killed Near Her Home, Nephew Arrested

The Territorial Police in the Rwizi Region have arrested Enock Atwebembire in connection with the murder of Ninsiima Medius, a 52-year-old woman from Kyonyo Cell, Bushwere Parish, Mwizi Sub-county in Rwampara District. The incident has shocked residents and left the community in deep mourning.

According to preliminary investigations, the tragic events happened on 4 January 2026 at around 6:00 pm. On that evening, Ninsiima Medius left her home to go to Rwentojo Trading Centre to buy salt. While at the trading centre, she came across a campaign rally for a parliamentary candidate and stopped for a while to watch the event.

As she returned home later that evening, tragedy struck just about 20 metres from her house. An attacker armed with a panga ambushed her and brutally attacked her. She suffered four deep cuts on the head and injuries to the fingers of her right hand. Despite her severe injuries, the victim managed to raise an alarm, attracting members of the community to the scene.

Residents rushed to help her, but sadly, the injuries were too serious. Ninsiima Medius bled excessively and later died from the wounds. The attacker escaped immediately after the attack, leaving the community in fear and confusion.

Police were alerted and responded quickly. Officers introduced a police canine named Hector at the scene. The trained dog picked up a scent trail and led officers to a public gathering nearby. It was there that the suspect, Enock Atwebembire, was identified and arrested.

Further investigations revealed disturbing details. Police established that the suspect had previously been found hiding under the bed of the deceased while armed with a panga. It was also confirmed that the deceased was the aunt of the suspect, a revelation that has deepened the shock within the family and the wider community.

Police say inquiries are still ongoing as they gather more evidence to establish the full circumstances surrounding the murder. Meanwhile, residents of Kyonyo Cell remain shaken, as they struggle to come to terms with the violent loss of a woman who was attacked just steps away from her own home
