KAMPALA, Uganda — Stella Apolot Isodo, the Ngora District Woman member of Parliament, died Saturday at Kampala Hospital, just two days after losing her seat in the general election.
Isodo, a member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), had been receiving treatment in an intensive care unit. Her death was confirmed by Ngora County lawmaker Juliet Achayo Lodou.
The legislator’s death follows a difficult re-election campaign conducted while she battled illness. Josephine Pedun, a newcomer representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM), was declared the winner of the Ngora contest with 17,010 votes. Isodo finished second with 11,334 votes.
FDC President Patrick Amuriat said Isodo had been flown abroad for specialized treatment last year and returned shortly before the campaign period.
“She underwent a successful surgery abroad and returned with a hope of recovering well to start campaigns,” Amuriat said. He noted that while Isodo was unable to campaign personally, her agents worked on her behalf.
“She would not have lost that seat if she were not sick,” Amuriat added.
Isodo also served as the spokesperson for the Teso Parliamentary Group. Colleagues remembered her as a dedicated leader who maintained strong relationships across the political spectrum.
“It’s a sad moment for her family because her stepbrother is being buried on Sunday, Jan. 18, and now her,” said Juliet Agonyo, the speaker for Soroti City.
Born Oct. 25, 1974, Isodo was 51. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced
