The military today denied having the National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President, Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, in its custody, despite serious concerns raised over her disappearance. This development came during a Habeas Corpus hearing at the High Court, where lawyers and supporters had hoped the court would compel the security agencies to produce her and explain her whereabouts.

According to information presented in court, Dr. Zedriga was reportedly abducted by armed men and later brought back to her premises, where a search was conducted. This incident raised strong suspicion that state security agencies were involved. However, in court, the military firmly rejected these claims, stating that Dr. Waru is not under their detention and that they have no information about her current location.

The denial by the military has caused frustration among NUP leaders, family members, and supporters who insist that her abduction was carried out in a coordinated and organized manner. They argue that such actions cannot be done without the knowledge or involvement of security forces, especially given the heavy presence of armed men.

After listening to submissions from both sides, the High Court adjourned the matter to next week, Wednesday. The judge said more time was needed to allow further clarification and to give the respondents an opportunity to respond adequately to the serious allegations raised.

As the country waits for the next court session, pressure continues to mount on the authorities to account for Dr. Waru’s whereabouts. Human rights activists and opposition supporters have renewed calls for justice and transparency, using the hashtag #FreeUgandaNow, as concerns over enforced disappearances and the rule of law in Uganda continue to grow.
