Former Mawokota South Member of Parliament Yusuf Nsibambi has reversed his earlier decision to cancel bursary support for dozens of students following public backlash and counselling from his wife.

Nsibambi recently made headlines after losing his parliamentary seat and taking a series of controversial actions, including disconnecting electricity that affected over 62 residents in his village. He defended the move, claiming the power line had been installed using his personal funds on private land.

He had also announced plans to withdraw financial support for between 60 and 70 students he had been sponsoring, arguing that he could no longer afford the costs after losing his main source of income. Nsibambi further claimed that only about 10 of the beneficiaries came from families that had actively supported his re-election bid.

However, speaking in an interview with Bukedde Television, the former Makerere University law lecturer revealed that he had a change of heart after advice from his wife, Hajjat.

“You have seen the videos making rounds of me saying the students I have been helping won’t go back to school. However, Hajjat advised me that if I give, I should give with one heart. So I decided to change my earlier remarks and let the students continue with their studies,” Nsibambi explained.

He disclosed that he spends over Shs75 million annually on tuition fees under his bursary programme.

Nsibambi’s initial statements had triggered mixed reactions on social media, with some sympathising with his financial challenges while others criticised him for punishing innocent students over political outcomes.
