UPDF Flags Off United Nations Guard Unit Ahead of Somalia Deployment

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially flagged-off the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) XII, which is set to deploy to Somalia for peace support operations. The ceremony took place at the International Peace and Support Training Center (IPSO-TC) in Ssingo.

Addressing the troops, the Deputy Commander Land Forces Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga urged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline and professionalism.

“You have been prepared for one of the most prestigious missions on the African continent. You are ambassadors of Uganda. The national flag you wear on your uniform is a constant reminder that you are representing your country,” said Maj Gen Ssemwanga.

Drawing from his experience as a former contingent commander in Somalia, Maj Gen Ssemwanga warned the troops about the complex and dynamic operational environment, particularly the threat posed by the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.

He underscored the spirit of Pan-Africanism as the cornerstone of Uganda’s involvement in Somalia and praised UPDF leadership, especially the Commander-in-Chief and the Chief of Defence Forces, for strengthening the force and enhancing Uganda’s contribution to regional peace and stability.

The IPSO-TC Commandant, Col Moses Nabaasa, reported that all pre-deployment training objectives had been fully achieved. He observed that for the first time, most international core modules were conducted entirely by UPDF instructors, showcasing the growing institutional capacity of the training centre.

Col Nabaasa reminded troops to maintain combat readiness, high morale, and teamwork while exercising caution in hostile environments.

He warned against indiscipline, particularly misuse of alcohol and financial mismanagement, emphasising that professionalism must guide their conduct both on and off duty.

“Financial discipline is critical. Spend within your means and remember why you are deployed,” he added.

Lt Col Nathan Akankunda, the Commander of UNGU XII, said that his troops are physically and mentally prepared for the mission.

“I promise that the Uganda flag will remain high. We shall execute our mandate with professionalism and discipline,” he said.

The LC1 Chairperson of Kakoola North, Ms Doreen Ayebare, commended the UPDF for sustaining strong civil-military relations and supporting local communities through medical outreach and social services.

The ceremony was attended by senior and junior UPDF officers, as well as members of the surrounding communities.
