Suspected Robber Dies After Mob Beating in Rukungiri; Two Arrested
RUKUNGIRI, Uganda — Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 22-year-old man identified as Crispus Nuwamanya, a resident of Kayaga Cell in Kakindo Parish, Bugangari Sub-county.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, the incident occurred on the night of March 11, 2026, at Kirundo Village in Rugoma Parish, Ruhinda Sub-county, Rukungiri District.
Maate told journalists that police at Ruhinda Police Station received information that suspected robbers had attacked the home of a businessman, Muhoozi Vincent Taifa, a resident of Kirundo Village.
Police officers responded to the scene and found that one of the suspected robbers, later identified as Crispus Nuwamanya, had already been arrested and severely beaten by residents. His alleged accomplice reportedly escaped and remains unidentified.
Police rushed Nuwamanya to Rukungiri Health Centre IV for medical attention. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was later taken to Buyanja Health Centre III Mortuary, where a postmortem examination was conducted before it was handed over to relatives for burial.
Police have since arrested Muhoozi Vincent Taifa and Baguma Felix Kariwano to assist with ongoing investigations into the incident.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the second suspect who fled the scene.
