KCCA Closes Industrial Area Road for Concrete Works

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has temporarily closed Sixth Street in Kampala’s Industrial Area to allow for major concrete road works, following years of complaints from motorists and businesses about severe potholes along the busy corridor.

In a traffic advisory issued late Friday, KCCA said the stretch of Sixth Street remains “completely closed off” as engineers carry out concrete reconstruction works intended to permanently fix the deteriorating road surface.

“KCCA is still onsite along Sixth Street in the Industrial Area. This stretch remains completely closed off to allow for proper execution of concrete works,” the authority said in a statement seen by ChimpReports.

The closure affects one of the most heavily used industrial corridors in Kampala, linking key warehouses, factories and logistics yards that serve the capital’s manufacturing and distribution sector.

For years, truck drivers and motorists have complained about deep potholes along Sixth Street, which frequently filled with water during rains and slowed the movement of cargo trucks serving the surrounding industrial depots.

Transporters said the poor road condition often caused traffic snarl-ups and vehicle damage.

Several businesses operating in the Industrial Area had previously urged the city authority to fully reconstruct the road rather than carry out repeated patching works that quickly deteriorated under the weight of heavy trucks.

KCCA said motorists should use alternative routes while construction is ongoing.

“Fifth Street and all the adjacent connecting streets within the area remain the primary alternative access routes to all areas served by the closed road,” the authority said.

The authority also urged drivers to follow traffic guidance provided by officers deployed around the construction site to ensure safety.

The rehabilitation of Sixth Street is part of broader efforts by the city authority to improve road infrastructure in Kampala’s industrial zones, where heavy commercial traffic often accelerates road wear.

KCCA has in recent years shifted toward concrete surfacing for roads that carry heavy trucks, arguing that concrete lasts longer than asphalt in areas with high freight traffic.

While the closure is expected to temporarily disrupt movement in the area, businesses say a durable reconstruction of the road could significantly improve logistics efficiency in one of Kampala’s busiest industrial hubs.
