Rukungiri: Byabashaija Elected North Kigezi Diocese Head of Laity
The Commissioner General of Prisons, Canon Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, has been elected as the new Head of Laity for North Kigezi Diocese, succeeding Turyabe Abel Matiita.
The election was confirmed by the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, following the Diocesan Synod held on March 21, 2026, at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano.
During the same synod, Ven. Capt. Jallon Atusinguza was elected Head of the House of Clergy, alongside the formation of key diocesan committees.
Bishop Asiimwe also announced several key appointments, including Rev. Canon Elisha Waswa as the Bishop’s Commissary, Canon Agaba Maguru as Diocesan Chancellor, and Isaac Atukunda as Deputy Vice Chancellor.
In addition, the synod granted parish status to three churches following earlier approval by the Diocesan Council. These are St. James Nyamizi Church of Uganda, St. James Nyaburondo Church of Uganda, and St. John’s Katungu Church of Uganda.
The developments mark a significant step in strengthening leadership and administration within the North Kigezi Diocese.
