Rukungiri Municipality has distributed more than Shs112 million to 19 community groups through its Community-Based Services Department, with support from the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. The funds were officially handed over during a meeting at the Rukungiri Municipal Council Hall.

John Bosco Twesigomwe, the municipality’s Principal Community Development Officer (PCDO), said the funds were allocated to support programs for People with Disabilities (PWDs), the Special Enterprise Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP) targeting individuals aged 60 to 79 years, the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP).

Under the distribution plan:

Six PWD groups received Shs4,876,442 each, totaling Shs29,258,652.

Three SEGOP groups received Shs3,591,800 each, totaling Shs10,775,682.

Four YLP groups received Shs6,212,786 each, totaling Shs24,851,144.

Six UWEP groups received Shs8,280,257 each, totaling Shs49,681,542.

Twesigomwe encouraged beneficiaries to manage the funds responsibly and remain committed to their projects, stressing that UWEP and YLP groups should repay their funds to enable others to benefit in the future.

Rukungiri Municipality Mayor Charles Makuru urged transparency and cooperation among recipients, advising them to involve their families in project updates and ensure timely repayment where required.

Resident District Commissioner Broni Kikanshemeza cautioned against misuse of the funds, warning that misallocation would undermine the programs’ objectives. He noted that municipal teams would closely monitor projects to guarantee accountability. “Some women and youth who have not repaid previous funds will be followed up to ensure compliance,” Kikanshemeza said.
