Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Asan Kasingye, has raised concerns over the rapid depletion of a mobile data bundle, prompting responses from both the telecom provider and the public.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kasingye stated that a UGX 10,000 “Gaga weekdays” bundle purchased at 10:14am was fully exhausted within approximately 40 minutes, despite being valid until Thursday morning.

He noted that he received multiple notifications indicating progressive usage, 50 percent, 80 percent, and eventual depletion, within the short time frame.

Kasingye called on MTN Uganda to provide an explanation for the unusually fast data consumption.

The post generated significant public interest, with numerous users reporting similar experiences regarding rapid data usage. Some attributed the issue to background applications, automatic updates, or high-bandwidth services, while others questioned the accuracy and transparency of data billing systems.

In response, MTN Uganda apologised for the inconvenience and advised customers to monitor their data usage through the MyMTN application, which offers a breakdown of consumption by individual applications.

The company also encouraged users to review device settings that may contribute to increased data usage.

The incident has renewed attention on data management practices among telecom providers and highlights ongoing consumer concerns regarding transparency, usage tracking, and billing accuracy in Uganda’s telecommunications sector.
