Mukono locals were startled in the early hours of 30th March 2026 when a fire broke out at a motorcycle repair workshop in Kitega Zone, Mukono Central Division. The workshop, owned by one Paul Muwawu, was engulfed in flames around 2:00 AM.

Luke Owoyesigyire the KMP Deputy police spokesperson says the fire, believed to have been sparked by a gas cylinder, destroyed property but, miraculously, no injuries were reported. He notes that firefighters and the Rescue team managed to contain the blaze before it could spread to neighboring structures. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.

While Mukono battled fire, Kampala Metropolitan Police South Region intensified their fight against crime in the city. At approximately 1:47 AM today, joint intelligence-led operations under Kabalagala Police Division swept through Kampala Road and the Mukwano (Kibuli Flyover) area in Makindye Division.

Luke Owoyesigyire says the operation targeted criminal hotspots and suspected waiting points where criminals prey on vulnerable individuals, particularly women heading to early-morning markets. Seven suspects were arrested and charged under SD Reference 03/30/03/2026.

In a related crackdown on 29th March, Nateete Police Division carried out a similar intelligence-led operation in Busega, Nalukolongo, and Kibumbiro. This swoop led to the arrest of 64 suspects who have been charged under SDR 60/28/03/2026 and arraigned before KCCA Court.

Owoyesigyire noted that police operations will continue to dismantle criminal networks and strengthen community policing. Residents across affected areas remain calm, and the police have assured the public of enhanced safety.
