Gen Jim Muhwezi: Museveni is a Champion of African Integration and Strategic Security

Gen Muhwezi’s profile is rich with achievements that highlight his dedication to public service and national security. Born on August 23, 1950, in Rukungiri District, he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and largest public university. His career in law and security began shortly after the fall of Idi Amin’s regime in 1979 when he joined the Uganda Police Force. He trained at the Tanzania Senior Police Officer’s College, quickly rising through the ranks to become an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
In early 1981, Gen Muhwezi joined the National Resistance Movement as one of its senior commanders in the guerrilla army, the National Resistance Army (NRA). Following the NRA’s success in seizing power in 1986, he became a member of the National Resistance Council (NRC) and served as the Director General of the Internal Security Organization (ISO) for a decade. His tenure at ISO was marked by a commitment to reform, as he worked diligently to enhance the agency’s reputation and effectiveness, ensuring that no allegations of torture arose during his leadership.
In 1994-1995, Gen Muhwezi was elected a delegate to the Constituent Assembly, a pivotal body that debated and promulgated the 1995 Ugandan Constitution. His political career continued to flourish as he was elected the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County in 1996. He transitioned into the cabinet as Minister of State for Education and Sports, a role he held until 2001 when he was appointed Minister of Health. His contributions to the health sector were significant, guiding policies that aimed at improving public health in Uganda.
In addition to his extensive political career, Gen Muhwezi has received accolades for his commitment to promoting peace and stability in Uganda. He has been honored with the Public Opinions Responsible Investment Global Award, recognizing his efforts in fostering a secure and prosperous environment for all Ugandans. Today, he serves as the Hon. Minister for Security of the Republic of Uganda and continues to be an influential figure in shaping national policy.
Gen Muhwezi is not just a politician; he is also an advocate of the High Court of Uganda and a member of both the Uganda Law Society and the East African Law Society. His legal background, combined with his military and security training from Tanzania and the former Soviet Union, has equipped him with a unique skill set that he applies to his roles in governance and public service.
On a personal note, Gen Muhwezi is married to Susan Muhwezi, who is related to prominent Ugandan businessman Bob Kabonero and Ambassador Richard Kabonero. Together, they have seven children, and he is known to enjoy reading and playing golf in his leisure time. As a member of the Anglican Church of Uganda, he remains connected to his community and values the importance of faith in guiding his leadership.
