Woman Crushed by Truck After Jumping Off Motorcycle in Tororo
Police in Tororo District are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a 40-year-old woman along the Tororo–Mbale Road.
The incident occurred at the Sewerage Roundabout, where the victim, identified as Mariam Nuru, a Somali national and resident of Malaba Town Council, reportedly died moments after attempting to escape danger.
According to preliminary police findings, Nuru was traveling as a passenger on a motorcycle when she noticed an approaching semi-trailer from behind. Fearing an imminent collision, she allegedly made a split-second decision to jump off the moving motorcycle in an attempt to save her life.
However, tragedy struck almost instantly. Police say that as soon as she hit the ground, she was run over by an oncoming semi-trailer, which crushed her to death on the spot. The motorcycle rider reportedly did not stop after the incident and remains unidentified.
The semi-trailer involved in the crash—a white Renault truck bearing registration numbers UBS 133F/UBS 615E—was later found abandoned at a nearby checkpoint.
Authorities have since towed the vehicle to the Tororo Police Yard for inspection.
Traffic officers visited and documented the scene, and the deceased’s body was conveyed to Tororo Municipal Mortuary, where a postmortem examination is pending.
The truck driver is currently on the run, and police are appealing to members of the public to provide any information that could lead to his identification and arrest.
Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson Moses Mugwe confirmed that investigations are ongoing, urging all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to help reduce the growing number of road accidents in the region.
“This is a tragic reminder of the need for vigilance and responsible behavior on our roads,” he said.
Authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crash as efforts intensify to bring those responsible to justice.
