At least four people have died in a road crash after a sugarcane-laden truck overturned onto a motorcycle along the Kamuli–Namasagali Road.

The accident occurred at Bulunda Village and involved a Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UAM 983F, and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UDL 411N. All four victims died instantly at the scene.

The deceased have been identified as Mudumba Grace, the motorcycle rider and resident of Naibowa in Butansi Sub-county; Nanzala Lydia, 38, also of Naibowa; Makayi Stephen, 40, a resident of Busiba Cell in Southern Division, Kamuli Municipality; and Balinaine Charles, 42, from Busiba Cell in Kamuli Municipality.

According to preliminary police findings, both the truck and the motorcycle were traveling in the same direction from Namasagali toward Kamuli Town when the accident occurred. A Sinotruck lorry was reportedly approaching from the opposite direction.

In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the driver of the Fuso truck allegedly swerved sharply to the right, lost control, and overturned. The truck, along with its heavy load of sugarcane, fell onto the motorcycle, trapping and killing all four occupants instantly.

The driver of the truck fled the scene immediately after the crash and remains at large.

Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson SSP Samson Lubega confirmed the incident and cautioned motorists against dangerous road maneuvers, particularly when operating heavy goods vehicles.

“Drivers must avoid sudden swerving, especially on narrow roads, as it can easily lead to loss of control and fatal consequences,” Lubega said. “Instead, they should reduce speed gradually and brake safely when faced with oncoming traffic.”

Police also urged motorcyclists to maintain a safe distance from heavy vehicles and remain vigilant at all times while on the road.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities have appealed to members of the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing driver.

“Anyone with relevant details is encouraged to report to Kamuli Central Police Station or the nearest police post,” Lubega added.

The tragic incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in the region, particularly involving heavy trucks and motorcycles, which remain among the most vulnerable road users in Uganda.
