WAKISO, Uganda — Residents and leaders in Wakiso District gathered today for the groundbreaking ceremony of the 6.5-kilometer Kayunga–Senge–Kawanda road, a project seen as a major infrastructure milestone for the region.

The 37.5 billion shilling project is funded by the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Ugandan government. Bouch Uganda Limited, in partnership with Nyoro Construction Company Limited, will implement the project over the next 18 months.

Monica Edemachu, undersecretary in the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, presided over the ceremony at Senge in Wakiso Town Council. She was joined by the resident district commissioner, the district chairperson, and the chief administrative officer.

Edemachu urged the contractors to deliver high-quality work on schedule, noting that the program is results-oriented and monitored by the Office of the President. She said sufficient funding is available and noted that a second phase of the project would depend on the successful completion of the first.

Interconsults Limited, in association with Nivaw Enterprises and Nova Consults, will serve as supervising consultants.

Engineer Sam Serunkuuma, general manager of Bouch Uganda Limited, said the company has the necessary equipment and personnel to meet the required standards within the 18-month timeframe.

Jude Mark Bukenya, the Wakiso chief administrative officer, emphasized that the road serves a vital commercial area and stressed the importance of value for money.

Assistant Resident District Commissioner Muwanga Lutaya called on the community to monitor the construction and warned against the theft of materials, such as fuel. He also encouraged the contractors to hire local workers.

District Chairperson Matia Lwanga Bwanika asked residents to use official channels for grievances and thanked landlords who have already provided the right of way for the construction.

District Engineer Namutebi Lilian said the 12-meter-wide road will be built to bitumen standard. Features will include a double-lane carriageway, drainage systems, asphalt surfacing, solar street lighting, and pedestrian walkways. The road will connect Hoima Road through Senge to Bombo Road.

Senior Community Development Officer Rukia Nakyeyune said 80 percent of the required right of way has been secured and urged the remaining property owners to cooperate.

Officials expect the completed road to improve transport connectivity, support local businesses, and drive socio-economic development in Wakiso.
