Justice Forum (JEEMA) officials have joined the growing list of Ugandans eulogising Kalangala Woman MP, Helen Nakimuli who died on April 19, 2026 after a surgical operation at a medical centre in Kampala.
Her death has since sparked renewed debate on the state of Uganda’s healthcare system, particularly the reliance on treatment abroad by public officials.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Mengo on Tuesday, JEEMA spokesperson Dr Swaib Kaggwa Nsereko eulogised Nakimuli as “a courageous voice for moral integrity in public life,” noting that her commitment to justice and service set her apart at a time when ethical leadership remains a challenge in the country.
Dr Nsereeko said the government should treat Nakimuli’s demise as a lesson and urgently invest more in the health sector. He stressed that improving medical infrastructure, staffing, and public confidence in local health facilities would help prevent similar tragedies.
According to him, the continued trend of leaders seeking treatment abroad highlights a growing lack of trust in domestic healthcare services, a situation he described as concerning for ordinary citizens who cannot afford such options.
“No citizen should die for lack of quality care at home, and no leader should have to seek dignity in treatment outside the country,” he said.
He called on Ugandans to honour her legacy by upholding the values of integrity, accountability, and service that she championed throughout her life.
The interim burial programme indicates that the remains of the shadow Minister for Information and Anti-Corruption will be interred on April 23, 2026.
Her body was yesterday driven from the Mulago Hospital mortuary by A-plus Funeral Company to Kalangala District for public viewing by her constituents.
A special district council sitting was held on Tuesday to honour her contribution to the district.
Her body will later be moved back to Kampala through the Masaka route for an overnight stay at the funeral home in Namungoona.
On Wednesday, April 22, in the morning, the body will be moved to Parliament for public viewing for the special seating, where parliamentarians will convene to pay tribute to the late Nakimuli.
On the same day in the afternoon, the body will be moved to the National Unity Platform (NUP) Party Headquarters, Makerere Kavule, before the official vigil at the family residence in Namungoona, Kampala.
On Thursday, April 23, a funeral service will be held at the Namungoona Orthodox Church, where the late was a member. After the service, the body will be taken to burial at the ancestral home in Luwero District.
