Museveni Hails Muhoozi’s Role in Strengthening UPDF as He Turns 52

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for what he described as a key role in strengthening discipline within the military and enhancing the operational capability of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

In a message issued on April 24, 2026, to mark Gen. Muhoozi’s 52nd birthday, Museveni credited him with contributing to efforts to curb corruption in the army and improving its combat readiness, noting that these efforts have boosted the UPDF’s effectiveness.

Born on April 24, 1974, he is the son of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni. He was raised partly during Uganda’s liberation struggle and later pursued military training both locally and abroad, including at institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The President’s message, addressed to “fellow Ugandans, fellow Africans and especially the Bazzukulu,” combined personal reflection with political undertones, as he expressed gratitude for his family and acknowledged the role of Ugandans in supporting his long-standing political movement.

Museveni paid tribute to his wife, Janet Museveni, for raising their children during the 1981–1986 liberation struggle, a period he described as critical in shaping their upbringing.

He also praised all his children who include Muhoozi, Natasha, Patience and Diana Kyaremera, for what he called their successful paths in family life and professional careers.

The President emphasized that Gen. Muhoozi, like his siblings, “was born in the resistance and grew up in the resistance,” adding that he has continued to play a role in advancing its ideals within the military establishment.

The birthday message comes a day after a celebratory dinner held in honor of Gen. Muhoozi at Skyz Hotel Naguru in Kampala.

The event drew a mix of senior military, political figures, and close associates, underscoring Muhoozi’s growing influence within both security and political circles.

The dinner, described by attendees as high-profile but controlled, featured speeches highlighting Muhoozi’s military career and his role in regional security engagements, as well as his public persona that has increasingly placed him at the center of national political conversation.

Gen. Muhoozi, a senior presidential advisor on special operations and the CommanderDefenceForces (CDF), has in recent years emerged as a key figure in Uganda’s power structure, with his activities closely watched amid ongoing debate about political succession within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

While the President’s message was largely celebratory and familial, its emphasis on Muhoozi’s military contributions and the legacy of the resistance is likely to further fuel public discussion about his future role in Uganda’s leadership landscape.
