Bees Sting Their Way Into Mbale High Court Proceedings

What began as an ordinary evening at court quickly turned into a scene of legal absurdity, as a swarm of bees stormed the premises, effectively declaring their own session and sending everyone else into retreat.

There are many ways court can be disrupted—adjournments, missing files, even heated legal arguments. But on Thursday evening, the Mbale High Court experienced a far more unconventional interruption: a full-blown bee invasion that left both the bar and the bench scrambling for cover.

At around 5pm, just as proceedings were winding down, a swarm of bees emerged from the basement cells and rapidly expanded their jurisdiction to courtrooms, offices, and the compound—no filing required.

Eyewitnesses say the bees wasted no time asserting authority, stinging indiscriminately and paying little regard to rank, role, or legal standing.

In what could only be described as a breakdown of courtroom order, armed officers were seen abandoning their posts (and rifles) in favour of a tactical retreat, while prison warders switched from custody duties to emergency evacuation.

For a moment, it appeared the bees had declared a state of nature over a house of law.

“They entered offices before we could close the windows. We tried using fire extinguishers, but the bees persisted. They were everywhere,” one victim recounted—clearly not amused by the proceedings.

Efforts to call in the Uganda Police Force reportedly did little to restore order, as officers found themselves equally unequipped to cross-examine or contain the unexpected “invaders.”

The swarm didn’t stop at the courtroom doors. Like an overzealous enforcement unit, it spilled onto nearby roads, briefly extending its reach beyond the court’s territorial jurisdiction and disrupting movement in the surrounding area.

Ironically, all this unfolded just as the court was preparing to handle matters concerning the Bugisu cultural leadership dispute over the Umukuka—though for a brief period, it seemed a different authority had taken over entirely.

No official statement had been issued by press time, and it remains unclear whether the bees will be cited for contempt of court.

What is certain, however, is that for one evening in Mbale, the scales of justice were temporarily tipped—by wings, not words.
