Katwe, Uganda — A man who allegedly ordered the release of two girlfriends from detention before surrendering to police has been convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison, authorities said.

The suspect, identified as Mbaziira, was rearrested in Katwe after previously escaping custody. Police say he phoned AIGP Christopher Damulira — Police’s Crime Intelligence Director — demanding that his two girlfriends and other accomplices be freed before he would turn himself in. The women were not released, and Mbaziira was subsequently detained and taken to court.

Yesterday he was convicted of aggravated robbery and handed a 30-year jail term. Police recovered two firearms from him: an AK-47 and a pistol reported to belong to a Commissioner of Prisons.

“I remember this infamous criminal who called me and demanded that I release his 2 girlfriends, also his accomplices, before he would hand over himself to police. Well, his girlfriends were never released and he was subsequently arrested and taken to court. The rest is now history, 30 years is good enough,” AIGP Christopher Damulira said.

Police confirmed the guns have been retrieved and said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the recovery and any possible internal links are ongoing.
