Two Schoolgirls Killed as Landslide Buries Family in Kisoro
devastating landslide has killed two Juveniles, injured two elderly Persons in Murora Sub-county, Kisoro District.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 3, 2026, at around 5:00 a.m. in Nyabiyonga Village, Kibumba Parish, when a house was partially buried by soil from a nearby hill.
According to police, the deceased have been identified as 14-year-old Musoni Brenda and 12-year-old Mujawimana Eseri, both pupils and residents of Bukerahe Village in Chibumba Parish. The two had reportedly been sent by their parents to check on their grandparents, where they had been staying during the school holidays.
Police says that while the four occupants were asleep, the landslide struck, burying part of the house and leading to the suffocation of the two girls.
The elderly survivors, Mulema Benon (70) and Mbaboneye Avelina (60), who are the grandparents, managed to escape with minor injuries. They were promptly rescued and taken to Chahafi Health Centre for medical attention.

Police officers visited and documented the scene, with the support of local residents who helped retrieve the bodies from the debris. Postmortems were conducted to establish the exact cause of death. The Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and commended the community for their swift response in aiding rescue efforts.
