UGX 300b road works: Nateete–Nakawuka section to close for three months
KAMPALA, Uganda — Motorists using the Nateete–Nakawuka Road corridor should prepare for significant traffic disruptions beginning Friday as the Ministry of Works and Transport closes a section of the road for drainage construction.
The ministry announced Wednesday that the stretch between the Mutundwe Road and Old Masaka Road junctions will remain closed for approximately three months. The shutdown is required to install drainage culverts as part of an ongoing road upgrade project.
Bageya Waiswa, the ministry’s permanent secretary, said in a public notice that the work aims to improve drainage, reduce flooding and enhance the durability of the road.
The closure affects a vital artery connecting Kampala to Wakiso District. To manage the flow of traffic, authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes, including Old Masaka Road, Masaka Road and Entebbe Road via Kajjansi. Diversions through Mutundwe and Wankulukuku are also recommended.
Commuters should expect intensified congestion on these bypasses, particularly during peak hours. Officials urged road users to follow all directional signage and traffic guidance to prevent accidents.
While the project addresses long-standing complaints regarding severe flooding and road deterioration, the three-month timeline is expected to increase travel times and costs for taxi operators, boda boda riders and daily passengers.
The ministry described the inconvenience as regrettable but necessary for the long-term improvement of the metropolitan area’s infrastructure.
