Six people have been charged and remanded over the death of a Congolese national who died in police custody in Kisoro.

The suspects appeared before Kisoro Chief Magistrate’s Court on May 15, 2026 and were charged with two counts.

Two civilians, Hakizimana Mpumuseni and Nsabimana John Bosco, face murder charges under Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act Cap 128.

Four police officers, Musabyimana Wycliffe, Yebuze Morris, Kizito Appeti and Ndagijimana Emmanuel, were charged with being accessories after the fact to murder, contrary to Section 189 of the Act.

Prosecution led by Ellen Nambi told the court that on May 7, 2026, Mpumuseni and Bosco caused the death of Uwimana Ntirenganya, a Congolese national, in an area between Kibyiyoni and Kagezi villages in Nyabwishenya Sub-county, Kisoro District.

She said the four officers, knowing the civilians had committed murder, aided them to escape punishment.

Chief Magistrate Patrick Bamuhiga declined to take pleas from the suspects, citing lack of jurisdiction.

The court was told that investigations into the case are ongoing. The six were remanded to Kisoro Government Prison until May 28, 2026 for further mention.
