KAMPALA — Security around the Nakasero residence of Speaker Anita Annet Among has reportedly been significantly tightened, with sources saying the home is now under round-the-clock surveillance by intelligence operatives linked to the Special Forces Command amid escalating tensions over the Speakership race for Uganda’s 12th Parliament.

Multiple sources familiar with the development said the operation is being coordinated by intelligence officers attached to the Special Forces Command, the elite military unit responsible for protecting President Yoweri Museveni and key state installations.

According to sources, the heightened monitoring is intended to prevent what some within the establishment fear could become an aggressive mobilisation effort using Among’s vast political and financial network ahead of the election of the next Speaker.

Sources further claimed that Among has privately been advised to step aside from the race in what insiders described as a “soft landing” arrangement intended to help her avoid a direct confrontation with powerful state actors increasingly believed to be backing Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth for the Speakership.

The dramatic developments come just hours after the reported arrest of newly sworn-in Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere Nsubuga, who was picked up from Masaka on Friday night following a bitter online confrontation involving supporters of Among, the Patriotic League of Uganda, and PLU Secretary General Daudi Kabanda.

The Speakership contest has in recent days evolved into one of the most politically charged internal battles within the ruling National Resistance Movement, exposing growing tensions between supporters of Among and factions aligned to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Muhoozi recently distanced himself from earlier endorsements of Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, declaring that PLU would instead support “whoever the President and Commander-in-Chief endorses.”

He later intensified speculation with a series of posts attacking corruption, luxury spending and powerful political figures, remarks many observers interpreted as indirect attacks on Among following public outrage over reports that she had acquired a luxury Rolls-Royce vehicle imported from the United Kingdom.

In one of the posts, Muhoozi wrote: “Our job is to SERVE Ugandans not ourselves! I cannot support corruption! I risked my life to make this country peaceful. Now that it is, it will not be taken by thieves. Never!”

Despite the mounting pressure, Among’s supporters maintain that she remains the officially recommended candidate of the NRM Central Executive Committee and argue that she still commands significant support among ruling party MPs.

Neither the UPDF, SFC nor Among’s office had officially commented on the reported surveillance by Saturday morning.
