Big Bosses at Anita Among’s Radio, School and Hospital Hide; Investigators Grill Junior Workers
Big bosses at Anita Among’s radio, school and hospital hid, leaving investigators with no option but to grill junior workers in Bukedea.
Security agencies expanded investigations into properties linked to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, with fresh search operations targeting a radio station, school, hospital and a controversial bus in Bukedea District.
The latest operation, carried out by a joint team of detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and military intelligence, marks another escalation in ongoing investigations into alleged corruption, illicit wealth accumulation and abuse of office connected to Among’s tenure as Speaker of Parliament.
Investigators spent several hours searching facilities associated with Among and the Anita Foundation in Bukedea.
Among the premises searched was Mama Bukedea FM, a radio station broadcasting on 102.1 MHz and operating from the Bukedea Comprehensive Academy complex.
The station has become one of the most influential media outlets in the Teso sub-region, airing political talk shows, community programs and local news bulletins. It has also been enjoying juicy advertising deals from parliament’s budget.
Security personnel also searched Bukedea Comprehensive School and a teaching hospital linked to the Anita Foundation as investigators sought documents, staff lists, employee records and information regarding the ownership and operation of various assets connected to the institutions.
It is said that the big bosses – the senior managers – had learnt that security operatives would raid the properties and chose to go into hiding.
Most of the staff found at the premises were junior and they told the operatives they knew so little about who owns the hospital, school and radio station, and how they are run.
A significant part of the operation reportedly focused on a bus operating under Bukedea Comprehensive School. According to reports, detectives suspect the vehicle could originally have been a parliamentary bus that was later diverted for use at the school.
The security teams reportedly sought registration documents, operational records and explanations regarding the ownership of the bus. Sources indicated that the vehicle’s regular drivers were unavailable during the search, delaying attempts by investigators to inspect some of the records linked to its operations.
The probe has also drawn attention to the relationship between Mama Bukedea FM and FUFA FM, another broadcaster associated with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), led by Among’s husband, Moses Magogo. Reports indicate investigators are examining operational and business links connected to the media entities.
The latest searches come just days after security operatives conducted high-profile raids at Among’s residences in Bukedea, Ntinda, Kigo and Nakasero, operations that sparked widespread political debate and intensified scrutiny over the wealth of senior government officials.
Investigators also searched the homes of Among’s personal assistant Ziporah Akol in Obur Ngagor Village, that of her mother in Apopong Village of Kolir Sub County, and the former speaker’s residence in Aput Village, Aerere Parish in Kamutur Sub County, in search of hidden money, as reported Here.
The widening investigations have generated mixed reactions across Uganda’s political landscape. Supporters of Among have accused authorities of conducting politically motivated operations, while critics argue that public officials must be held accountable over the source of their wealth and assets.
Despite the mounting pressure, security agencies have not announced formal charges against Among. Authorities have also remained largely tight-lipped about what exactly investigators recovered during the searches.
Reports claim that witchcraft items placed on pictures of First Family members were recovered from Anita Among’s homes in raids happening days after President Yoweri Museveni played recordings of Rebecca Kadaga instructing a witchdoctor to bewitch and kill Museveni family members, prompting Kadaga to cry. Meanwhile, Anita Among’s expensive vehicles have been taken away by security operatives and her bank accounts frozen, in an operation that reported to have started with intelligence operatives disguising themselves as road construction workers to spy on politicians and business people frequenting Anita Among’s Nakasero home.
