Ebola: Bishop Asiimwe Suspends Diocesan Conferences
The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, has suspended all diocesan conferences and days of prayer as part of efforts to prevent the spread of Ebola.
Speaking at Riverside Hotel in Rukungiri District, Bishop Asiimwe said he had called off a conference that was scheduled to take place last weekend at Nyakina Church of Uganda. He has also suspended the quarterly conference that was due to be held in June 2026 at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, the diocesan headquarters.
He explained that the quarterly conference, which is held four times a year, attracts Christians from different districts across the country, and that such large gatherings could increase the risk of spreading the Ebola virus.
Bishop Asiimwe further directed all churches within the diocese to install handwashing facilities and ensure that worshippers wash their hands before entering church. He urged church leaders to maintain proper seating arrangements and observe all standard operating procedures aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola.
The bishop added that on Martyrs Day, all churches within the diocese will hold services in their respective parishes instead of converging at a central venue, in order to protect Christians from possible infection.
