Locals confronts NDA officials in Kahokya, Kasese
There was a confrontation between residents and officials from the National Drug Authority (NDA) at Kahokya Trading Centre in Kahokya Sub-county, Kasese District, after the officials impounded drugs and closed drug shops and clinics that did not meet the Ministry of Health’s minimum operational standards.
Mr. Vincent Muhayirwa, the Chairperson Local Council II for Kahokya Parish, told our reporter this evening that irate residents yesterday confronted NDA officials after they reportedly impounded drugs, accusing them of conducting the operation without prior public notification.
Muhayirwa said that during the scuffle a glass door window of NDA vehicle was smashed by a stone allegedly thrown by an unidentified person. He added that the situation, which had gotten out of hand, was calmed by police officers from Lake Katwe Sub-county, who rushed to the scene after NDA officials reported the alleged assault and convened a crisis meeting at Kahokya Trading Centre. According to Muhayirwa, police have appealed to residents who allegedly fled with boxes of impounded drugs during to voluntarily return them to the local area leadership. However, neither police nor NDA officials had commented on the allegations by press time.
