Residents of Matugga, Bombo and Kapeeka are set to benefit from improved and more reliable electricity supply after UEDCL commissioned a series of transformer upgrades aimed at tackling persistent low voltage and network overloads.

Thousands of residents and businesses in Matugga, Bombo and Kapeeka in Wakiso District are set to experience improved electricity supply following the commissioning of several transformer injection and upgrade projects by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited.

The projects, commissioned on June 17, 2026, are part of UEDCL’s broader efforts to strengthen the electricity distribution network and address challenges linked to rising demand, transformer overloading and low voltage in fast-growing peri-urban areas.

Officials from UEDCL said the interventions are intended to improve the reliability and stability of power supply while supporting household consumption, small businesses and emerging industrial activity in the beneficiary areas.

Among the key interventions is the installation of two new transformers in Galozi Zone, Matugga, with capacities of 100kVA and 50kVA respectively.

In Matugga Market (Kirowa), an overloaded 25kVA transformer has been upgraded to 50kVA, while another unit was relocated to a more suitable load centre to enhance distribution efficiency.

Additional works include the installation of a 50kVA transformer in Wabitembe along the Matugga–Bombo corridor, another 50kVA unit in Kabonge, and two additional transformers of 25kVA and 33kVA in Mulama Kitebere Village.

According to UEDCL, the upgrades are expected to significantly reduce transformer overloads, resolve long-standing low voltage complaints and improve overall service delivery for domestic, commercial and industrial consumers.

The utility firm further noted that improved infrastructure will expand electricity access in previously underserved communities, potentially stimulating business growth, job creation and improved social services.

Local residents and leaders welcomed the developments, expressing optimism that the improved power supply will attract investment, enhance productivity and support socio-economic transformation in the area.

The projects form part of UEDCL’s ongoing modernization drive aimed at improving Uganda’s electricity distribution network to match growing demand across urban and peri-urban centres.
