KAMPALA, Uganda – June 29, 2025 – The Uganda AIDS Commission today announced the successful conclusion of research on Lenacapavir, a groundbreaking six-monthly injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), that has demonstrated 100% effectiveness in preventing HIV infection.

This innovative PrEP option, follows its approval for production and use by the US Food and Drug Administration, and will soon be available in Uganda after comprehensive consultations with stakeholders and the establishment of minimum requirements.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will spearhead a multi-pronged approach to integrate Lenacapavir into Uganda’s national healthcare system. The key steps include:

*National Drug Authority Evaluation: The National Drug Authority will evaluate and license Lenacapavir for use in Uganda.

*Updated National Guidelines: Existing national HIV prevention guidelines will be updated to incorporate the use of Lenacapavir.

*Healthcare Provider Training: Healthcare providers will receive specialized training to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to prescribe and monitor Lenacapavir use.

*Essential Drugs List Inclusion: Lenacapavir will be incorporated into the country’s essential drugs list.

*Robust Data Collection: Tools will be revised to enable effective capture of data on Lenacapavir use, facilitating client monitoring and ensuring accountability.

Once these critical steps are completed, the Uganda Aids Commission noted that Lenacapavir will be seamlessly integrated into Uganda’s HIV prevention program, significantly expanding options for individuals at high risk of HIV infection.

“In the interim, oral PrEP will continue to be offered at designated facilities for those at high risk. Furthermore, Carbogratevir, another highly effective injectable PrEP administered every two months, has already been incorporated into the Ministry of Health HIV prevention guidelines, with local availability in advanced stages.” The Commission adds.
